Banyana Banyana will face Sweden, Italy and Argentina in Group G of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Coach Desiree Ellis, who is in Australia, learnt the fate of the African Champions at the Aotea Centre in Auckland early this morning (22 October 2022).
Banyana qualified for their second World Cup in a row after winning the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July this year.
Fellow Africans Nigeria are in group B, taking on co-hosts Australia, Republic of Ireland and Canada. In Groups C, Zambia are joined by Spain, Costa Rica and Japan. Morocco, in the meantime, have been pitted against Germany, Colombia and Korea Republic in Group H.
The World Cup will be staged at 10 stadiums in New Zealand and Australia from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
FIFA has expanded the competition from 24 teams to 32 for the first time. This will make it the largest FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. Of the 32 countries to participate in this Women’s World Cup, only 29 have qualified thus far.
The remaining three nations will be decided at the inter-confederation play-offs, scheduled to take place in New Zealand between February 18 and February 23, 2023.
Some countries will be making history by qualifying for their first Women’s World Cup, their first senior World Cup or, in some cases, their first World Cup at any level for any gender.
Next year’s tournament will be played between 20 July and 20 August.
