Striker Joanne Solomons scored a hat trick and captain Portia Modise picked up a brace as the national women’s soccer team, Banyana Banyana, thumped Lesotho 9-nil in their opening COSAFA Cup encounter in Zambia yesterday.
Lesotho are not rated highly in Africa and it showed as South Africa netted with ease.
South Africa’s next game is against Malawi tomorrow afternoon, and they are expected to win again.
Zimbabwe and Angola are seen as the strong teams, although it’s Zimbabwe, who have the edge, having beaten Angola 3-1 in their opening game.
This year’s tournament kicked off on Monday, 21 August, and ends with the final on Saturday, August 26.
The first edition of the COSAFA Cup was played in Zimbabwe back in 2003.
The second instalment, scheduled for 2005, was postponed until this year, because a host venue could not be secured.
