Barbra Banda scooped more acclaim and recognition when the Zambian football captain was crowned Women’s African Footballer of the Year, in a night when the cream of the continent was on show at the latest edition of the CAF Awards, in Rabat, Morocco on Monday, 16 December, 2024.

The Zambian star has been in fine form for club and country as she has led from the front with her scoring skills. Banda was remarkable in front of goal, netting 53 goals in 60 games.

The forward has been on a winning run in recent months, and was recently awarded with the BBC’s Women’s Footballer of the Year title.

Banda’s haul of accolades is just reward for her sensational performances, as she made history by becoming the first player to score three hat-tricks at the Olympic Games, scoring three goals in Zambia’s heart-stopping 6-5 loss to Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics earlier this year.

This feat bought up her tally as Africa’s all-time top scorer – male or female – in Olympic football. The Zambian captain was instrumental in helping her USA team Orlando Pride win the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League title, and was up against Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie and Sanaâ Mssoudy from Morocco for the ultimate prize.

Despite missing out on the big award, Nnadozie was crowned Goalkeeper of the Year for a second year in a row. The shot-stopper was a sensational in domestic football with her French club Paris FC, where she was also awarded the Goalkeeper of the Year Award.

Mssoudy didn’t leave empty-handed when the AS FAR player picked up the Women’s Interclub Player of the Year gong for her exploits in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Mssoudy’s AS FAR teammate Doha El Madani was awarded with the Women’s Young Player of the Year award, having scored the most goals at the recent women’s championship league, netting six goals in five matches to secure the Golden Boot.

The winning didn’t end there for the host nation as Lamia Boumehdi was crowned Coach of the Year, as she led her team TP Mazembe to the CAF Women’s Champions League title, the side from DR Congo also winning Women’s Club of the Year on the night.

Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi was Women’s Referee of the Year, while 2024 gsport African Woman in Sport winner, Diana Chikotesha, was unveiled as the Women’s Assistant Referee of the Year.

Nigeria was awarded with the Women’s National Team of the Year title.

Thought there were no individual wins for Banyana Banyana, South Africa had strong representation when the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies trio of Andile Dlamini, Karabo Dhlamini and Lebohang Ramalepe, along with Racing Louisville’s Linda Motlhalo, were named in the CAF FIFPro Women’s Best XI team.
