The South African U20 Women’s National Team, Basetsana played to a goalless draw against their Burundi counterparts in South Africa’s ‘away’ tie, played at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday , 8 October, 2023.

Both matches, home and away legs, will be played in South Africa after Burundi requested to host their home match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, since it’s stadiums are not CAF approved, and cannot host international matches.

Basetsana dominated throughout the match, creating lots of chances but their forwards failed to convert any of those opportunities.

Nthabiseng Majiya and Adrille Mibe rang rings around the visitors defence but somehow failed to put the ball into the net.

“We should have won this encounter easily.”

Basetsana Head Coach Maud Khumalo

”We played great football and had many scoring opportunities, but somehow failed to connect with any of many chances we created.

“We have a few days before the second leg on Wednesday and we must correct these shortcomings,” concluded Khumalo.

South Africa will play Burundi again this coming on 11 October 2023 in their home ‘return’ match of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

This match will also be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium at 3pm.
