Temwa Chawinga stole the spotlight leading Malawi to qualification for the tournament’s knockout phase on day four of the 2023 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship in Dobsonville on Saturday, 7 October, 2023,
Chawinga’s remarkable performance included scoring four second-half goals, contributing to her team’s impressive 8-0 victory against Eswatini in a Group A match. With this feat, she maintained her position at the top of the tournament’s goal scorer chart, boasting seven goals in just two matches.
The scoring spectacle began with Sabinha Thom, who completed a first-half brace, while Carolyne Mathyola and Rose Kadzere also added their names to the scoresheet.
Malawi currently leads Group A with six points, followed by the host nation South Africa, who secured a 3-1 victory against Madagascar in the second Group A match at the same venue, giving themselves a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
Thubelihle Shamase converted a first-half penalty, and Samkelisiwe Selana netted a second-half brace for Banyana-Banyana, with Anajrasoa Velomanantsolo scoring for Madagascar.
In the group standings, the seven-time champions hold the second position with three points, tied with Eswatini, who dropped to third place due to goal difference. The top three teams in all groups, along with the best runner-up, will advance to the knockout phase.
The final Group match between South Africa and Eswatini will determine the fate of the teams. If either South Africa or Eswatini wins that match and Malawi loses their final pool fixture, Malawi will retain the top spot in the table based on head-to-head results.
