South Africa’s senior women’s hockey side ended their European build-up on a high, coming from behind to beat Scotland 3-2 and level a two-match Test series at Peffermill in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
Ntsopa Mokoena scored twice and Ongeziwe Mali struck the winner with a minute of regulation play remaining, overturning a one-goal deficit in the closing stages of a contest that stayed within reach of both sides for the full hour.
Scotland set the early pace and took the lead in the 10th minute when Charlotte Watson converted a penalty corner. South Africa answered six minutes later, Mokoena finishing from open play to level the scores at 1-1.
The hosts regained the advantage in the 30th minute, Jennifer Eadie firing home from Scotland’s fourth penalty corner of the match to make it 2-1. A goalless third quarter followed, with defences on top at both ends and neither side able to convert the openings that came their way.

South Africa found their range in the final period. Mokoena claimed her second of the afternoon in the 54th minute, again from open play, to draw the visitors level, and Mali completed the turnaround in the 59th minute with a field goal that settled the series at one win apiece.
The manner of the win carried its own message. South Africa were not awarded a single penalty corner across the two Tests, yet scored all three of their goals from open play, while every Scotland goal in the series came from a set piece.
Captain Edith Molikoe led the side in both matches, with goalkeepers Morgan de Jager and Marlise van Tonder sharing duties across the series. Shanna Mendonca and Laikén Brisset came into the starting line-up for the second Test, with Taheera Augousti, Jean-Leigh du Toit and Caylin Maree among those rotated through the fixture.
The series had opened two days earlier at the same venue, where Scotland took the first Test 2-0. Heather McEwan put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute from a penalty corner, and Amy Costello added a second with three minutes left, also from a set piece, as Scotland converted twice from five penalty corner opportunities.
South Africa created chances in that opening match but could not finish them, a pattern they corrected decisively in the second Test.
Both squads now turn to the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026, which runs from 15 to 30 August. South Africa are in Pool D alongside China, England and India, with all their pool matches staged at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen in the Netherlands, where they open against England.
Scotland head to the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium, for their Pool B campaign against Argentina, Germany and the United States.
For South Africa, drawn against three opponents ranked inside the world’s top ten, the Edinburgh result offers evidence that the side can hold its shape under pressure and score when it matters. Coming back from a goal down against a World Cup-bound opponent, away from home, in the last week of preparation, is the kind of finish a squad carries into a tournament.

South Africa qualified for the World Cup through the Africa Cup of Nations, and the Edinburgh series was the final competitive hit-out on the calendar before the squad reports to the Netherlands.
Mokoena finished the series as South Africa’s leading scorer with two goals, both taken from open play in the second Test, while Mali’s late strike gave the visitors their first win of the tour and a share of the honours against a side preparing for its own World Cup campaign.
