The third day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s T20 Super League 2022 belonged to the batters as they recorded a total of three half-centuries across the day’s encounters at the Six Gun Grill Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on Thursday, 15 December 2022.

Coronations captain, Suné Luus started the scoring spree with a 50-ball 57 to lead her side to victory, while Eliz-Mari Marx’s vital 56 off 42 balls helped the Thistles fight back from a precarious position with the bat before they eventually fell short against the Starlights.

Delmi Tucker was the third batter to surpass fifty, as she posted the highest individual score of the week so far, with 69 runs off 52 deliveries against the SA U19 Women.

In the opening clash of the day, the Coronations won the toss and sent the Thistles into bat. The experienced Sunette Viljoen-Louw (28) laid the platform for the innings alongside Andrie Steyn (16) before a regular fall of wickets curtailed the Thistles’ innings to a below par 106/5.

In their chase, the Coronations lost an early wicket in Kirstie Thomson (0) before Momentum Proteas pair of Lara Goodall (37) and Luus set about pursuing the target in confident fashion as Luus drilled eight fours towards an unbeaten half-ton to help her side record a seven-wicket victory with 2.1 overs to spare.

The Thistles had an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the defeat as they took on the Starlights in the second match of the day. That rebound didn’t get off to the best of starts as they lost five early wickets to leave them reeling on 46/5 at one stage. Those wickets brought Marx and Nondumiso Shangase (35) to the crease as the pair combined superbly to put on 75 for the sixth wicket with Marx as the aggressor, blasting four fours and four sixes, before Khayakazi Mathe (3/20) helped wrap up the innings with an outstanding hattrick as the Thistles finished on 129/9.

Despite a fightback with the bat, the Thistles had their backs against the wall with the ball as the explosive batting order of the Starlights featuring Tazmin Brits (49*) and Anneke Bosch (48*) blew their opponents away with a dominant partnership to see their side over the line in the 18th over with eight wickets in hand.

In the finale of the day, the Starlights proved they are a team to be reckoned as all-rounder Tucker produced the best batting display of the 2022 edition as she smashed eight fours on her way to a match-winning score as the red team ended on 138/5 in their allotted overs against the SA U19 Women.

Tasked with a challenging target, the future stars looked good in patches as wicket-keeper batter Karabo Meso (21) top-scored alongside lower-order batters Ayanda Hlubi (18) and Caitlin Wyngaard (18) before the SA U19 Women’s innings petered out to 95/7 in their 20 overs to give the Starlights a comprehensive 43-run triumph.

Starlights’ Kgomotso Rapoo starred with the ball to pick up figures of three for 22 with ball in hand.

The fourth and final day gets underway on Friday, 16 December as the SA U19s face a double-header against the Thistles and the Coronations before WSL 4.0 concludes with a showdown between Dané van Niekerk’s Starlights and Luus’ Coronations.
