South African swimmer Rebecca Meder broke her own 100m individual medley African record in the semi-final round at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday, 15 December 2022.
Meder first broke the long standing record set by Kirsty Coventry in the morning heats, finishing in a time of 59.38 to book herself a spot in the semi-final.
Later that evening, the 20-year-old finished third in a time of 58.98 to qualify fifth fastest for the finals.
“I’m very happy. I think I’ve been chasing that time for a while now, so I’m really, really happy with that time,” said Meder.
Elsewhere Lara van Niekerk took part in the 100m breaststroke final, but unfortunately she couldn’t produce the form she had in the heats, the 19-year-old ended up in fifth place in a time of 1:04.12.
Meanwhile, the women’s 4x50m freestyle relay team of Caitlin de Lange, Rebecca Meder, Emily Visagie and Milla Drakopoulos were in record-breaking form. The team set a new continental mark of 1:40.80 to finish 11th overall. De Lange’s opening leg of 24.33 seconds was also a new African record.
