A family of frontal systems will march into the Eastern Cape this weekend bringing with it snow on the mountains, rain, gale force westerly winds and 10-12 foot surf to Nahoon Reef in East London, where the fourth edition of the O’Neill SA Open of Surfing is scheduled to get under way on Friday April, 27.
While the cold weather and rain might not be ideal conditions for a long weekend at the beach, the surfers in the O’Neill SA Open will not complain, as they will get to compete in typically-challenging Nahoon Reef surf that is expected to peak on Saturday, and settle on Sunday in time for the finals of the event.
The competition will be tough in the huge surf of the Surfing South Africa-sanctioned 2A-rated Women’s division of the O’Neill SA Open will offer Pro Surf Tour ratings points.
Locals who know Nahoon Reef like the back of their hands are Nikita Robb, Alice McGregor and Telana Flanagan, surfing against to competitors in Sarah Maritz (Warner Beach, the Women’s top seed) and defending champion Stacey Guy (Melkbosstrand).
Former World Championship Tour campaigner Heather Clark of Port Shepstone is seeded sixth.
Thanks to funding allocated to Surfing South Africa by the Lotto and sponsorship from O’Neill, the fourth SA Open of Surfing has increased its rating across the board, and is now the single biggest PST tournament on the 2007 calendar.
The O’Neill SA Open of Surfing is proudly presented by Surfing South Africa and hosted by Border Surfriders Association. Daily results will be posted on the Surfing South Africa website.
