The SA Women’s Open Chess Championships 2007 starts today in the Banking Court of Cresta Shopping Centre, in Johannesburg.
The event, which is hosted by the Gauteng Junior Chess Association, will consist of seven rounds, the first of which will be played today starting at 5:30pm, after the official opening.
Rounds 2 and 3 will be played tomorrow; Rounds 4 and 5 on Saturday; and Rounds 6 and 7 on Sunday.
A special guest at the event will be USA Women’s Chess Champion (2002 and 2004) and Woman Grand Master, Jennifer Shahade.
Jennifer will be analysing the games, and promoting her book ‘Chess Bitch: Woman in the Ultimate Intellectual Sport’ at the Open Chess Championships.
She will also be participating in an exciting Woman Grand Master Simultaneous Event at the tournament, where she will play a number of players at the same time, walking around a central round area making one move at a time, in an attempt to beat them all.
South African defending champion Melissa Greeff has just arrived in Johannesburg from her home in Cape Town, and is looking forward to the event.
“I am very excited. Its going to be quite tough, but it gives me an opportunity to test my skills.
“I am also looking forward to meeting Jennifer Shahade. I’ve heard a lot about her. I think the simultaneous event tomorrow will be very exciting.”
gsport…for Girls! Editor Kass Naidoo will MC the official opening, happening at 5pm today. Come to Cresta and join in the fun!
