Boland Netball is proud to announce that they recently received a sponsorship from Konica Minolta in Paarl, and the Senior Boland Netball team will be known as Boland Bizhub for the next year.
When we asked Peter Gdanis, Branch Manager for Konica Minolta, why he decided to get involved with netball, and Boland Netball in particular, he answered: “Netball is an up and coming sport.
“It reflects the demographics of our society,” said Gdanis. “You have girls from all backgrounds and race groups playing the game. Konica Minolta has a long history of being associated with sport.
“And when we got the chance to get involved with a successful team such as Boland Netball, we couldn’t let such an opportunity pass us by.”
Boland’s Senior Netball team is the current defending champions of the annual Spar National Netball Competition. They won the title against the Free State last year in a nail-biting final. This year the competition will take place in Durban from 7 – 14 August.
Despite netball being the fastest growing sport after soccer in South Africa, it still remains a mystery as to why women’s sport in South Africa doesn’t enjoy the same support when it comes to sponsorships, media coverage and general awareness.
When Bennie Saayman, President of Boland Netball, was asked what needs to be done to change this situation, she had the following to say: “More visual advertisement.
“To make people aware of the biggest participating women sport in the country I am sure that advertisement on TV will change the mindset,” said Saayman.
“Seeing that everybody is watching National Netball League (on TV) with snippets of the game with the different teams in action, the World Netball Championships in November in New Zealand etc. will make people aware of netball.
“Everything boils down to money (sponsorships to promote the game). My question: How many people know SA Netball is currently ranked 5th in the world?”
With the support and backing of Konica Minolta, and the passion and commitment of the Boland Bizhub team, this combination can only go from strength to strength.
