The annual Speedo KZN Aquatics Level 1 Provincial championships were held at Kings Park swimming Pool in Durban on 20-21 February 2016.
Eight-year-old Monica Botha from Amanzimtoti cleaned out the medals table with a total of 9 Gold medals with a silver in the Women 10 & Under 200 backstroke (Gold and silver both swam record times in this event).
She placed fourth in the Women 10 & Under 200m Breaststroke where the top 4 swimmers also set a new standard by all swimming record times.
The best was kept for last. On Sunday 22 February (after a total of 9 events over the two days) during the last event of the swim meet, this eight-year-old displayed incredible endurance by placing first in a time of 3:18:17 in the Women 10 & Under 200 meter Individual medley. This was the first time that she won a 10 & Under event.
A total of 6 Women 8 & Under meet records were smashed by Botha. She placed third in the Swim meet’s Top female point scorer trophy – second and first place was taken by two 12-year-old swimmers.
When asked how she felt setting 8 meet records she replied: “I feel very tired but happy. Swimming is tough but I love it!”
Botha swims for Seagulls swimming club and train on her own at a local gym in Amanzimtoti. She is homeschooled, currently busy with Grade 4. Her father, Jan Botha, a Level 2 American Coaches Swimming Association qualified coach, takes care of her swim coaching.
