The Women’s National Bowls Championships (commonly known as “The Nationals”), hosted this year by Port Natal Bowls, started in and around Durban on Saturday.
The competition is being played on a new format according to which club teams consisting of four players compete in Singles and Triples simultaneously, whereafter the Fours are played.
The competition has been shortened to one week, as against the two weeks previously, mainly to accommodate the younger generation of working bowlers.
This new format was introduced for the Men’s Nationals 2 weeks ago, and was met with the approval of the majority of the entrants.
The Fours start on Monday and will be played until Wednesday, whereafter the winners of each section play for a place in the finals on Friday and Saturday.
Each code (Singles, Triples & Fours) compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze, whilst the overall club winners will also be recognized.
Entries have come from 17 of the 20 Districts, meaning a total of 167 teams entered for this competition, with Port Natal topping the list with 63 entries.
Amongst the entries there are many well known bowlers from all over the country.
Former Springbok Lynn Dwyer (Parkhill) will be in action, whilst more recent international players like Sharon Glenn (Belgravia), Ellie van Coller (Alberton), Leone du Rand (PHSOB), Ellen Cawker (Margate) and Jill Hackland (Umhlali) will also be there to strengthen their respective teams.
Also in action will be Loraine Victor (Centurion) and Sylvia Burns (Constantia), who were named among the recently-announced team to represent South Africa in the World Bowls Championships early in 2008 at Christchurch in New Zealand.
All the results will be available on the Bowls South Africa website.
