Anriette Schoeman (Team Proline Computers –Club Cycle Lab) showed that she has recovered very well after being hit by a vehicle in February, by comfortably winning the One Life / 80.4 Cycle Tour on Saturday.
The ladies started the annual tour in very misty conditions, with an early major break coming 9km into the race.
The bunch had just begun to respond when disaster struck – an oncoming vehicle suddenly appeared out of the mist as the bunch was crossing a bridge.
Startled rides swerved to the left and chaos followed as 14 cyclists went down, with Eastern Province veteran cyclist Faye Woolard ending up in the river.
Anriette Schoeman just missed the crash while Andrea Holdt and Nicole Allan were forced to stop, and were left behind by the chasing bunch.
After 14km Anriette Schoeman was the only lady left in the main bunch as she proved her strength in climbs and overall speed.
On the return route Schoeman left the bunch behind at the summit of Helspoort Pass, and gradually opened the gap to comfortably finish in first place.
