Boxing South Africa held the prestigious South African Boxing Awards ceremony to celebrate the resilience of the country’s champions at Durban ICC Convention Centre on Friday, 30 June 2023.
Smangele Hadebe who aims to be a world champion took the top honours of the coveted Female Boxer of the Year as she will be competing in August for the WBC title against an opponent from Mexico, Melissa Leona Meraz.
Hadebe was quoted saying: ‘’I think I’m paving the way for other boxers to keep on pushing and I also want to keep on pushing because I want to achieve more and be recognised.’’
Hadebe was up against Bukiwe Nonina and Hedda Wolmarans for the award.
Other deserving winners on the evening included Promoter of the Year that was awarded to Xaba Boxing Promotions, meanwhile Nomvelo Shezi received Aspiring Promoter of the Year Honours.
Monalisa Takane bagged the Female Prospect of the Year Champion, meanwhile Ring Official of the Year went to Phumeza Zinakile.
Thema Zuma and Bathabile Ziqubu won the Female Fight of the Year Award for their unforgettable battle against Asanda Simelane vs Shokwe. The duo beat of the Hedda Wolmarans vs Ruth Chisane, Sharadene Fortuin vs Ellen Simwaka and Simangele Hadebe vs Stumai Muki fights.
