The draw for the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers took place at Rabat in Morocco on Wednesday, 20 July 2022.
The tournament will be held in Durban from 7-13 August, where the champion clubs from around the COSAFA region will converge for the second staging of the championship after a hugely successful inaugural event in 2021.
The winners will advance to the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League finals that are set to be held in Morocco later this year.
South African side, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are both the defending COSAFA and continental champions after they lifted the trophies in both competitions last year.
They will be among the favourites to do so again as they have been paired with Costa de Sol from Mozambique and Double Action from Botswana in Group A.
Black Rhinos Queens from Harare will be absent as they cannot compete again due to the suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association by FIFA.
In Group B, the Green Buffaloes of Zambia are also making a comeback after losing the semi-finals in 2021, alongside the newcomers Young Buffaloes from Eswatini and Comoros representatives, Olympic de Moroni.
The six teams will be split into two groups and play one another in a round-robin format. The winner of each pool will advance to the final, with the second-placed teams to play in a bronze-medal match.
To join these teams, there will be five debutants in two pools that has eight teams.
CBE from Ethiopia are the top seed in Pool A, to be joined by three debutants, Warrior Queens from Zanzibar, Fofila PF from Burundi and AS Kigali WFC from Rwanda.
Pool B has Simba Queens who are the runners up, paired with debutants GRFC from Djibouti and She Corporates from Uganda. The last team to join pool B is Yei J. Stars from South Sudan.
The competition will also be the forerunner to the ever-popular Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship that will be held in Gqeberha from 31 August – 11 September, another huge shot for women’s football in the region.
