Spar Proteas Claim a 2-0 Series Victory Over Wales

The Spar Proteas clinched a 2-0 series victory over Wales after a 57-47 win in their second test match in Cardiff on Wednesday, 20 July 2022.

Wales had a strong start and dominated the first half as they managed to take an early lead over South Africa by two goals. The Welsh team were tight on their defence not giving the South African shooters a chance in the circle.

The Proteas had a solid start to their second quarter as they managed to work on their defence over Wales and convert their attacking opportunities into points which saw them lead at half-time by two goals.

Changes in third quarter saw the Proteas building steady momentum to extend their lead over Wales with good playing speed from the attack. The changes included Lefébre Rademan in Goal Attack, Khanyisa Chawane in Centre and Zanele Vimbela in Goal Defence. The South African’s were able to keep their dominance and intensity in the fourth quarter to win the match and clinch a series win.

Spar Proteas coach Dorette Badenhorst used the match to try out different combinations from the starting line-up and through-out the match.

“We started the game with different combinations to see how the players will perform when they are in the starting line-up. I think it’s easy to go on court when you are 15/20 goals ahead but we need to see what players will do when they are in the starting line-up as well just to confirm the combinations when we go into the Commonwealth Games.

“We decided to keep the combinations for the second quarter just to settle the players. We gave them instructions to use their definite second movements and fakes on the attack as well as stronger man to man defence contesting the first ball hard.”

South Africa will travel to Birmingham to continue the final preparations for the Commonwealth Games.
