South Africa’s first and only internationally sanctioned single day event, the PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular, this year forms the backdrop of SporteX, South Africa’s largest sporting exhibition at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from 14-16 September.
The success of the cycling event at the Dome, which is expected to attract 8 000 cyclists this year, spurred the organisers on to take on the challenge of creating a complete sporting product over the weekend.
And so it was announced at the launch function at the Coca-Cola Dome today that this year the weekend of 14-16 September will not just be “about the bike”.
If you consider yourself a versatile sportsperson or a sports fan you have to be at SporteX where than 80 exhibitors have already booked their spots, but the weekend’s entertainment constitutes much more than just a browsing and buying excursion.
During the weekend you can ride your bicycle on one of the most stunning routes in Gauteng, as the expo also features action cricket, a game of golf, some touch rugby or some action on the beach volleyball courts, not to mention indoor bow shooting.
SporteX boasts something for everyone and is a natural extension of the PowerAde Dome2Dome, one of the biggest cycling races on the local calendar.
The Dome2Dome, which takes place on 16 September, attracted more than 5000 entries last year, and from 2007 it can boast the distinction of being the only commercially owned single day race in South Africa that forms part of the World Cycling Body’s Africa Tour.
For Leandro le Roux, race-organiser, it is a dream come true. “For the first time in South African Cycling history there is UCI sanctioned one-day race where local and African riders can earn valuable ranking points.
“It was my dream from the beginning to build the Powerade Dome2Dome Classic into international race. Now the hard work starts, said Le Roux.
“The whole organising committee wants to make South Africa proud by presenting a faultless race. The race has now got to act as a showcase of cycling in South Africa.
If cricket is your game, be sure to go to the “Beat the Speed” cricket arena, where the “Beat the Speed” bowling machines will be as true a test as facing Australia’s Brett Lee, for example.
Some of the country’s quickest bowlers will also be in attendance, and if you’re up to it, they will bowl at you. There will also be live screenings of the 20/20 World Cup Cricket, and some cricket celebrities will assist in development clinics and hold autograph sessions.
The Action Sports Arena will be hosting numerous action sports events during the course of the weekend. BMXing, skateboarding and inline skating are among the activities that will be on show.
The PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycle Challenge event will consist of a 116km National Classic Road Race, which is for the first time this year also a seeding event for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.
If 116km is a bit of a stretch, you can enter either the 80km or 40km options, and if you fancy your little one as a star of the future, get him or her to the toddler and kiddies race.
For the fans there be a Concrete Chaos Mountainbike kermesse over an obstacle course inside the Dome parking lot and an exciting road kermesse will follow the classic road race.
