Candice Lill Crowned Elite Women’s Champ at Bike Fest

Pro MTB racer Candice Lill was crowned the 2023 South African XCM Elite Women’s Champion at the inaugural Bike Festival in Paarl on Sunday, 5 March.

Lill led the race from the start to secure the victory in a time of 3:53:18. At first, she battled with Amy Wakefield and Tiffany Keep behind her but the cross country champion upped her pace to race to the finish line.

Despite starting at the back of the group after 10 kilometres of racing, Haley Preen of Freewheel Cycology, completed the race in second place with a time of (4:01:25 | +8:10), while Amy Wakefield of Efficient Insure Infiniti rounded up the top three in 4:06:21 | +13:03.

Speaking to news outlet bikehub, Lill said: “I just wanted to show I was capable of today. My focus was to just ride like I know I can and then, whatever would happen would happen.”

She concluded: “It was such a good route!” She continued: “It started raining here towards the end but luckily  it was all downhill from there for me already. The rain actually made the trails nice and smooth.”
