Celine Abrahams Blogs About Stepping Into the Sponsorship Space

2021 marks an incredible milestone in my career in the sport industry as I took a bold step venturing into the sponsorship space to play my part to encourage better corporate support for women’s sport.

At the start of the year, gsport’s aim was to increase our partners in the newsroom as well as the Momentum gsport Awards platform and, as the initiative’s Content Lead, it was vital that I equipped myself to ensure that I had a better understanding of the sport and sponsorship industry.

Through ESA – a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to inspire, unite and grow a welcoming and diverse sponsorship industry – I had the pleasure of learning from industry leaders on the global stage, to the challenge of completing practical assignments, as well as meeting interesting and diverse people from around the world who had outstanding insights to share on the ever-developing sponsorship and marketing space.

As I embarked on this learning journey, I was afforded the opportunity by gsport Founder, Kass Naidoo, to head the sponsorship content for our partners, which include; Brand South Africa, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Imperial, Momentum, Nielsen Sport South Africa, Sasol, SuperSport and Telkom.

Working alongside these corporate giants who are champion supporters of women’s sport encouraged me to push the boundaries. Although it was challenging in the beginning, I eventually found my footing to ensure women’s sport receives the recognition and investment it truly deserves.

On a personal note, it is mind-blowing to witness my growth within a space I previously had not seen myself venturing into. It has been the most fulfilling experience that I aim to build on, year-in and year-out!

In 2022, my goal is to elevate my role in capitalising the commercial value of women’s sport and make sure that our current and new partners see the importance of investing in women in sport.
