Amanda Sohby – a 21-year old student at Harvard University ranked 13 in the world – led Central Gauteng A to an unexpected runaway victory over defending champions Western Provincein the final of the Laser Kaplan Cup Interprovincial Squash Championships, played at the UCT courts in Cape Town on Friday 18 July, 2014.
Former national champion, Diana Haynes provided the first win for eventual champions Central Gauteng when she defeated Western Province’s Sacha West in four games.
For the home side, Siyoli Waters, ranked 34 in the world, then levelled matters, edging through 12-10 in the decider of a topsy-turvy match against Cheyna Tucker, the South African Universities number 1 player.
In the number-1 slot Sohby, a former Junior World champion and winner of 11 WSA titles, was always in control in her straight-game victory over Denmark’s Line Hansen, which nudged the Gauteng team into a 2-1 lead.
University of Johannesburg student, Lume Landman raced to a 11-6 11-3 lead against the more experienced Western Province number 5 player Karen Blom, before Blom took the third game 11-8 and it seemed as though the defending champions might get back into the picture.
Landman, however turned in a mature focussed display, to give Gauteng victory when she clinched the fourth game 12-10.
Elani Landman added another 3 points to the Gauteng total when she outplayed the Western Province’s number 3, Alex Fuller in straight games to give Gauteng a 19-5 win.
Third position was taken by Eastern Province who beat Northerns 19-7.
With a 33 point lead Western Province C walked away with the B Section trophy after inflicting a 19-3 defeat on Eastern Province B.
