The second leg of the R110 000 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series was welcomed in Jeffreys Bay on Saturday by clear skies, bright sunshine and very contestable 0.5- to one metre beach break waves at Magnatubes, ideal conditions for the country’s top female surfers and holiday-makers.
Chantelle Rautenbach was the standout performer of the day, amassing scores of 8.75 and 6.25 points out of a possible 10 in her Round 1 heat in the 3A rated R12 500 Open division, giving the Melkbosstrand teenager both the highest scoring single ride and top heat total of the event to date.
Rautenbach and the top two in the first round heats advanced to the last 16 in the event where they come up against the eight seeds in the event who include Heather Clark (Port Shepstone), winner of the first leg of the Billabong Girls Get Out series in Margate last week, reigning series champion Sarah Maritz (Warner Beach) and third seed Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie).
The Under 15 girls division was next up and Kommetjie’s Holly Armstrong and Tanika Hoffman continued their fine form, posting heat victories along with Cara MacDonald (East London).
Top seed Tarryn Chudleigh, Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) and Nicole Annells (Warner Beach) were the Round 1 winners in the 3A rated, R10 000 Pro Junior (U20) division, and Tahra Uren won the opening round of the Novices.
Free learn to surf lessons Yoga sessions accompanied continuous beach festival promotions, while an increasing onshore wind during the day did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors.
TV personality Marius Roberts was on hand to conduct the beach games, while the free surfing beginner’s classes were run by Etienne Venter of the J-Bay Surf School, and Tara Hossack led the girls through the stretching and breathing exercises in the Soft Lips Yoga sessions.
Free paint, canvasses and easels drew plenty of interest as the winning painting with a theme of ‘Endangered Species’ earns the artists a year’s supply of underwear from Girl Inc and the all the action was photographed by the promo girls from Seventeen magazine, who also dispensed free bottled water and copies of the publication.
The Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series continues on Sunday when the finals in all four divisions will decide the recipients of R26 500 in cash and product vouchers, the Kustom Kreative award will go to the most deserving local girl and the spectacular Von Zipper Expression Session will be held.
The series started in Margate last weekend and after Jeffreys Bay there are stops in Cape Town (2-3 February 2008) and Scottburgh on the KZN coast on 16-17 February where the 2007/8 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series champions will be crowned.
