The Jeep Girls team comprising Amy Jane Mundy and Sara Muhl got their 2007 Sabie Experience mountain bike race off to a perfect start with a close victory on the first stage in Sabie on Friday, which they comfortably expanded after Saturday’s stage two for an overall lead well exceeding 10 minutes.
Mundy and Muhl clocked a respectable four hours 20 minutes for the 78km opening leg, a full close two-minute lead over the Maverick Chicks’ Tania Raats teamed with Natalie Unstead for the tough stage, which included 1800 metres of climbing.
Saturday’s Stage 2 of over 82km was the longest leg of the four-stage event, during which a puncture forced second-placed Raats and Unstead to abandon their tight battle for the stage win with Mundy and Muhl.
This gave the Jeep Girls team a comfortable 11-minute lead, as they went on to win the stage and extend their advantage over their rivals in the overall standings, prior to Sunday’s Stage 3, which exceeds 65km with 1650 metres of climbing.
