South African field hockey player Charné Maddocks is currently living out her dream of playing in Europe as she recently joined Delta Venlo Dames hockey club in the Netherlands.
The 24-year-old made her international and Olympic debut on the 24th of July 2021, in a Pool A match against Ireland.
Since then, Maddocks has not played any other international games and says that she hopes to use her experience gained in the Netherlands to fight her way back into the South African national team set-up.
Maddocks is contracted to play for Dames for the 2022/23 season, however she is hoping to leave an impression that will extend her stay overseas.
Speaking with Rudene Hare, Maddocks shares how the Delta Venlo Dames opportunity came about and she shares a message to the youth.
Charné, thank you for chatting to us! Please can you tell us how the opportunity came for you to join Delta Venlo Dames in the Netherlands.
It was always a dream of mine to experience playing hockey in Europe. I contacted a member from Delta to ask if there was any club that I could play for.
And then, Delta Venlo granted me the opportunity to play for them. I firmly believe if you don’t try you will never know an answer and the worst that can happen is getting a “no”.
How long will you be playing for the club?
I will be playing for the 2022/2023 season, however you never know what the future holds!
What is the next step for Charné?
I would like to make it back into the national team and to compete on an international platform again. I will be taking it day by day.
Do you have any message for young stars who would also love to play abroad one day?
Six years ago, I made my first visit to the Netherlands and always said I would love to come back and play abroad. Never look down on your dreams and wishes. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. It is an amazing experience and never stop believing in yourself and your abilities.
