Cliffhanger in Squash Tests

The second squash test between South Africa and the Netherlands at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg was a cliffhanger ending in a 4 all draw.

South Africa sent it’s top two players into action on Wednesday, but despite playing attacking squash, neither Claire Nitch (facing world No. 2 Vanessa Atkinson) or Diana Argyle (who took on Annalize Naude, ranked 16th in the world), both struggled against world-class opposition.

Neither Nitch nor Argyle were capable of victory, both bowing out in four games.

Margriet Husiman sealed a 3-0 win for the Netherlands women when she outplayed Karen van der Westhuizen in straight games.

After the men regained some ground, Aluscha Botha, ranked 1 under 19 in South Africa after the Junior inter-provincial championships in June, gave South Africa a 4-3 lead when she accounted for Milou van der Hiejden in five games.

Together with the men’s matches, South Africa lead the four-match series 1-nil, with the remaining two legs in Port Elizabeth on Saturday 12th August and in Fish Hoek on Monday 14th August.
