Team South Africa’s Yané van der Merwe had a commendable performance in the F64 Discus Final at the Paris 2023 World Para Athletics Championships in France on Tuesday, 11 July.

However, despite her best efforts, she narrowly missed out on a medal. The gold medal went to the impressive Juan Yao of China, with Faustyna Kotlowska representing Poland securing the silver, and Samantha Heyison from the United States taking home the bronze.

As the competition heated up under the warm and sunny Paris sky, the incredible female athletes showcased their skills and determination in the field events. Though van der Merwe may not have reached the podium this time, her contribution and effort deserve recognition.

Away from the competitive arena, a truly inspiring moment unfolded when double Olympic champion Caster Semenya, paid a visit to her fellow South Africans. Semenya’s visit brought not just her physical presence, but also a deep sense of motivation and empowerment.

Her words of encouragement resonated within each athlete, empowering them to conquer their own challenges and push past their limits. Semenya’s visit carried even greater significance considering her recent triumph at the European Court of Human Rights, where she successfully won her appeal against hormone regulation due to her medical condition, hyperandrogenism.

Not only is Semenya an accomplished two-time Olympic 800m champion, but she also stands as a symbol of resilience and bravery for athletes around the world. Her unwavering pursuit of justice and her willingness to uplift and inspire others exemplifies the true spirit of sportsmanship.

As the Paris 2023 World Para Athletics Championships continue, we eagerly anticipate the outstanding performances still to come. Both on and off the field, the athletes of Team South Africa exemplify the dedication and strength that make them an inspiration to all.
