Cape Town and South Africa’s future surf stars posted excellent scores in the solid one-metre offshore waves at Muizenberg, as the opening day of the Kahuna Surf Series showcased the depth of junior talent available in the country.
Two rounds of competition in all divisions were completed, and Anna Notten and occasional competitor Caitlin Morris (both St James) recorded two wins in the U16 girls.
The Kahuna Surf Series is designed to foster and encourage aspiring contest surfers to participate in competition and restricts entry to those who have not previously won a nationally rated event, thus giving the rising stars the opportunity to experience the thrill of winning.
The format sees all entrants compete in three rounds before the top four in each division contest a final where thousands of Rands worth of surf industry products are at stake.
The events are staged at three different venues on the Cape Peninsula annually, with the results of each event tallied and the series champions collecting even more loot, from custom built DVG surfboards through Reef wetsuits and Freestyle watches to Kustom footwear and Von Zipper eyewear.
The KSS also addresses the transformation of surfing in South Africa with youngsters from historically disadvantaged communities allowed free entry into the events and Puma Sportswear and Surfing South Africa (SSA), the national controlling body for surfing, sponsoring their transport costs and equipment needs.
The third annual series, run by the Kahuna Surfing Academy, is sanctioned by Western Province Surfing and proudly supported by Reef Wetsuits, Von Zipper, Kustom, Palmer’s, Zigzag surf magazine, Saltwater Girl, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Atlantic Surf, DVG Surfboards, Fox, Lizzard, Surf Zone, Billabong, Island Style, Puma, Rusty, Freestyle, Surf Shack and SSA.
The third round of the first Kahuna Surf Series event of 2007 will be staged at Surfer’s Corner, Muizenberg, starting at 8am on Sunday morning. The finals in all six divisions will follow at 11am and the prize-giving is scheduled for the Big Blue surf café at 1pm.
