Cycle Tour Firm Favourite for Girls

Cycling is a growing sport among women, and the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour is a firm favourite on female cyclists’ race calendar, where they currently comprise approximately 24% of the Cycle Tour entry field.

"This may seem like a low number, but considering that cycling has until now been considered to be a white male-dominated sport, this is an encouraging number which we actively seek to grow," says David Bellairs of the Cycle Tour organising team.

This growth is further facilitated through efforts by the Pedal Power Association (PPA), one of the two beneficiaries of Cycle Tour proceeds.

Among the many cycling development projects spearheaded by the PPA is the organisation’s co-sponsorship of two women’s-only cycling workshops in the Western Cape.

These workshops were hosted by Erica Green, former double Olympian, and introduced recreational and novice riders (road and mountain bike) to formalised training programmes, women-specific nutrition and the mechanical aspects of cycling.

More exciting projects are in the pipeline for 2008. "One of the things that makes the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour so special is the varied entry field from women of all ages, who flock here from around the world," adds Bellairs.

"A few examples include Claire Graaff who, at 78, will be the oldest women -and one of 15 women over the age of 70 – to participate in the 2008 Cycle Tour, and Cherise Taylor who, at the tender age of 17, raced into second place during the 2007 event.

"The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour is not only safe but also beautifully scenic.  Where else will you have people cheering you on from coffee shops or the chance to see a whale frolicking in one of the beaches you pass along the way!"

Women who still want to enter for the 2008 Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour will have one final opportunity when substitution entries open in the New Year.  Visit the Cycle Tour website for more.
