England Women secured a commanding 36-run victory and series win over the Proteas Women in the second T20 International, at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, on Wednesday, 27 November, 2024.

England’s fiery batting display and Sarah Glenn’s bowling heroics proved too much for South Africa, who now look to salvage pride in the final game at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Saturday.

South African captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to level the series after their defeat in the opener.

Ayanda Hlubi gave the Proteas a perfect start, delivering a scintillating opening spell that rocked England’s top order when she dismissed Sophia Dunkley for a duck, and then Maia Bouchier for 9, leaving England reeling at 15/2 early in the powerplay.

However, the day belonged to Danielle Wyatt-Hodge, who scripted history with a sensational 78, becoming the first female cricketer to surpass 3,000 T20I runs. Her blistering knock, supported by Heather Knight’s 26 and an unbeaten 67* from Natalie Sciver-Brunt, helped England recover to post a daunting 204/4.

Hlubi’s final figures of 2/19 were a standout for South Africa, and Nadine de Klerk also shone for South Africa, claiming her 50th T20I wicket with a sharp caught-and-bowled effort to dismiss Knight.

Facing a mammoth chase, South Africa’s hopes rested on their batting depth, but early setbacks derailed their pursuit. Tazmin Brits fell for a duck in the first over, and Laura Wolvaardt’s promising start ended at 25, when she was caught by Lauren Filer off Charlie Dean’s bowling.

Faye Tunnicliffe (22) and Annerie Dercksen (24) showed resistance, but Sarah Glenn’s magical spell (4/20) dismantled the middle order. Chloe Tryon contributed a spirited 30 before falling to Glenn, while de Klerk (32*) and Sinalo Jafta (17*) added an unbeaten 39-run stand, taking South Africa to 168/6 in their 20 overs.

England’s disciplined bowling, led by Glenn and Sciver-Brunt (1/32), ensured South Africa never got close to the target. With the victory, England sealed the series and highlighted their dominance in the series.

The Proteas now turn their attention to the final match in Centurion on Sunday, aiming to end the series on a high and give their fans something to cheer about.
