England’s Davina Perrin is set to shatter barriers at the tender age of 15 as she is in line to become The Hundred’s youngest player after being signed by Birmingham Phoenix for this year’s competition.
The young batter was part of the Central Sparks – finalists of the Charlotte Edwards Cup in June. Perrin is also a member of the African-Caribbean Engagement Elite Programme since its roll-out in the West Midlands.
ACE is an initiative seeking to increase opportunities as well as develop young Black cricketers, established by former England cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent.
“It’s a dream come true to have signed for Birmingham Phoenix this summer,” Perrin said.
“To have the opportunity to train and potentially play alongside the likes of Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine and Amy Jones is amazing and I can’t wait to get going.”
Another teenager, 16-year-old Mahika Gaur, who last month took 5 for 2 as United Arab Emirates bowled out Nepal for just eight, has moved to Manchester Originals.
The Hundred’s managing director Sanjay Patel said: “Today is a really exciting moment as we confirm the squads for the second year of The Hundred.
“We’ve got some exciting youngsters joining the women’s competition with the likes of Davina Perrin and Mahika Gaur being signed up.”
The women’s tournament begins on the 11th of August, due to women’s cricket’s involvement in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
She is all the qualities that society needs to nurture: female, young and Black. Perrin is most certainly playing her part in that collective project at just 15. We cannot wait to report more about her in the future as gsport.
