Desiree Ellis: “Three Points in This Match Could Be a Foot into the Quarter-Finals

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis reveals her team’s eagerness to build on their winning performance as the South Africans take on Burundi in Group C of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on Thursday, 7 July 2022.

The South African women’s national team got their AWCON campaign off to a great start with a 2-1 victory over the Super Falcons of Nigeria on Monday.

Ahead of the match Ellis said: “The team is always looking for improved performances and will be looking to keep a clean sheet, whilst creating chances.”

Debutants Burundi, who lost 4-2 to Botswana in their opening encounter on Monday, will be looking to bounce back from their defeat.

Coach Ellis has warned her team not to underestimate their opponents emphasising that: “Three points in this match could be a foot into the quarter finals.”

Speaking on the match, Banyana midfielder Amogelang Motau, says: “Winning the first game was a big confidence booster and gives the team momentum for Thursdays match but that is now history and the focus is on the next game.”

While South Africa take on Burundi at 19h00 CAT, Group C table leaders Botswana face Nigeria in their next game on Thursday at 22h00 CAT.
