England Women were in devastating form in the final T20 International, beating the Proteas Women by 9 wickets, with 51 balls remaining, to sweep the series 3-nil, at SuperSport Park in Centurion, on Saturday, 30 November, 2024.

Heather Knight won her second toss of the tour, and following the series’ trend of captains choosing to field first, put South Africa in to bat – who were missing their established openers – captain Laura Wolvaardt, and her big-hitting partner, Tazmin Brits.

The sadly early departure of South Africa’s debut opening pair of Faye Tunnicliffe (1 run off 4 balls) and Anneke Bosch (first ball duck) was followed by an inspiring third-wicket partnership between Suné Luus and Annerie Dercksen (19 off 12), the main partner in the duo.

Luus (21 off 17) shouldered the responsibility to carry the momentum forward with the arrival of stand-in captain Chloe Tryon (1 off 5). But both fell early, and the SA innings only gained some impetus with the coming together of innings top-scorer Nondumiso Shangase (31 off 35) and Nadine de Klerk (19 off 22) in a 52-run partnership at a critical phase of the innings for South African innings.

Shangase lost her wicket just as the innings acceleration was due when she was stumped off the bowling of Freya Kemp in the 16th over. The Proteas Women lost another wicket in each of the next four overs to end their innings bowled out off the final ball, to post an underwhelming total of 124 all out.

Set a target of 125 to win, England romped to the win with the sole loss of Maia Bouchier (35 off 21 deliveries), dismissed when Nondumiso Shangase grabbed an impressive catch off the bowling of Ayanda Hlubi in the sixth over of England’s innings.

The unbeaten partnership that followed between series batting supremo Danni Wyatt-Hodge (53*) and Sophia Dunkley (24*) endured to the win, a blistering 128/1 struck in just 11.3 overs, to win by 9 wickets with 51 balls remaining.

England’s Charlie Dean won Player of the Match for her leading tally of three wickets for 26 runs in 4 overs, while the indomitable Nat Sciver-Brunt – always in the thick of the action for the talented England side – deservedly earned Player of the Series.

The manner of the loss of the final of the three T20I matches will sting, and the management team will have to dig deep to ensure that the Protea Women, with the return of key players for the 3-match ODI series and with ICC Cricket World Cup points on the line, regain the necessary composure to effect a major turn-around in the status quo.
