Dorah Nkgage: My gsport Attraction!

My name is
Dorah Nkgage and I am a lover of sports and a loyal reader of gsport … for
Girls! My passion for sports, although sometimes dormant in the past, is
what attracted me to gsport. So far the articles and personal accounts I have
read have inspired me and boosted my confidence in ways I never thought
possible.

I am
currently doing Administration work in a Government Department but I would like
to pursue a career in the field of Sports Management/Administration soon. I
have loved sport for as long as I can remember, even though at first I didn¹t
realise I could actually pursue a career in Sports without being an athlete.
When I finally realised that this was possible I was in the perfect place to
pursue my dream.

I was a
student and a basketball player/basketball committee secretary and team
care-taker at T.U.T, an institution that has one of the best Sports Departments
in the country, but I allowed my fear, my pride and my lack of self confidence
stand in the way of something I loved.

I slowly
began to shut sports or anything related to it out of my mind and my life. I
dropped out of the basketball team and then left the committee. I managed to
convince myself that it was a wasted passion and also began to put myself down.

This may
sound silly, but it wasn¹t until South Africa first lost and then won the World
Cup bid that I realised what our country has to offer. When we won the 2010 bid
I was overwhelmed by joy. I knew right then and there that if I were to die
knowing that I had done nothing to benefit SA sport in some way, because then I
would not have served my purpose in life.

Personally, I
am a huge basketball fanatic ­ I just love the sport – and once I fell in love
with the sport it stayed with me even during those times when I abandoned it.
My dream is to see basketball, especially women¹s basketball, in South Africa
reach the level of American basketball i.e. the NBA and the WNBA.

I have seen
what talent we have in SA and I know that our basketball players have the
potential to go far. Nothing would make me happier than to play a part in
helping this wonderful sport grow in our country.

As a first
step in pursuing my dreams I am currently studying Sports Management part-time
(and loving it) and I simply can¹t wait till I complete the course at the end
of this year. I realise that pursuing a career in sports, especially as a
woman, is not going to be easy, but I am really looking forward to giving it
all I have.

Sport in South Africa is
growing and with services like gsport, the role of women in Sports will also
continue to grow and I am determined to be part of it. All I can say now is,
watch out sports world ­ women are here to stay.
