Over the past three months we have discussed Passion and two of the three components to Action, namely Goal setting and Planning, and secondly, the art of Visualization. This month we will look at what I consider to be the most vital component of action, that being the combination between attitude and execution. In a nutshell, the importance of work ethic and character to your success.
Part # 3: Attitude & Execution
One may not consider attitude to be a component of action but I believe it is, given the fact that ultimately your attitude is totally governed by your will. In other words, you have the power to cultivate and develop a good healthy attitude, in terms of training, competition, failure and success and most importantly, good sportsmanship. Developing such an attitude is an act of the will and thus an action, a deliberate effort.
I’ve always believed that one’s attitude in life and toward life will determine ones altitude. Your attitude will make or break you in this game called LIFE….. never mind the sporting arena. There the consequences to good or bad attitude is just a little more immediate perhaps, and more obvious. We would be wise to cultivate the right attitude if we wish to succeed.
Your attitude will ultimately determine and govern your work ethic and the amount of passion, time and effort you put into ensuring that your goals become a reality. Nothing ever came of wishful thinking or luck. Every true success story has a history of immense dedication, vision, faith or belief and perseverance.
A Long Road Ahead
To walk the long road of success you will require a good attitude. An attitude of never giving up, always seeing the opportunity in every situation and embracing both the highs and the lows for what they can teach you.
You will need to develop a work ethic of the highest standard… for you can be sure, someone else out there, your competition, will always be working that bit harder than you, practicing that bit longer than you… and on competition day, it is the one who has done the toil, that realizes success.
You must determine in your heart to work at whatever you do, every workout, every visualization session, and every additional form of preparation, with all your heart. Remember, if you are doing your sport for the right reasons, because you truly believe it is what you are destined to do, and you are passionate about it, then dedication and total focus will be a natural consequence.
It is here that the real truth is found… in the long hours of physical work and mentally draining pressures and expectations. If you have the passion, have set the goals along with your strategy [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][plan] and you have done your mental training [visualization] frequently and excellently, then your work ethic and attitude will of necessity already be in place for the most part.
Action with Excellence
Ultimately everything in life eventually comes down to the ‘doing’ part. Decide to do your part with excellence. Play honestly for if you take short cuts by way of cheating either in competition or training, by performance enhancing drugs or various other negative actions, you will never know true success no matter how many wins you have under your belt.
True success is the manifestation and realization of your absolute best potential. In that, you climb your way toward your ultimate destiny wherein lies real fulfillment.
Remember, your sporting career is really just a very short and small part of your life. You are so much more than your sport and your achievements. Your tomorrows can potentially always be brighter and greater than your yesterdays if you choose to play fair, be honest and mine every opportunity for all the knowledge and personal growth that it may provide.
May you find great success as you plot, plan and play your way through this season of your life. Enjoy every moment of your sporting career and do it with all your heart so that some day when you have retired and look back, you will know the true measure of your worth.
True action begins in the heart [motives and passions]. From there it moves to the mind [thoughts] and eventual mouth [words]. Desire, think and speak only the outcomes that will ensure you become your best YOU!
God bless you and your loved ones as you enjoy this festive season. May each of us be reminded of the fact that we have so much to be grateful for and may we all in our blessings endeavour to take some form of action to bless those less fortunate than us.
