Scottish athlete, Eilish McColgan, set a new 10 000m race record beating Paula Radcliffe’s time, which was set in Munich in 2002.
McColgan’s time of 30:00.86, beat the 21-year standing of Radcliffe’s 30:01.09.
The 32-year-old ran her first track race of this year at the Soundrunning Ten event in California.
Speaking after her historical achievement, McColgan said: “Two years ago I ran a big PB here so it’s nice to be back with the crowds.
“I knew I was in really good shape, but to have it all come together on the day doesn’t always happen,” champion Scottish athlete, Eilish McColgan
McColgan is no stranger to setting new records. During the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, she won the 10 000m race. She now holds the British records for the 5000m up to the half marathon mark.
She is now moving her focus towards marathon distance races and is planning on competing in London in April 2023.
The seven-time national champion represents both Great Britain and Scotland at international athletics events. She represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics, 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic but represented Scotland at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The new record holder originally specialized in the 3000m steeplechase, but unfortunately due to an injury she had to step away from the sporting code and specialize in other track events.
McColgan won two gold medals when she was in university, both at the 2012 Scottish Universities Indoor Championships for the 1500m and 3000m events.
It almost seems as if McColgan is chasing records set by Paula Radcliffe. Not only did she break the 30 000m record but she also set a new British record in Dubai for the 5km road race in February 2022. McColgan broke Radcliffe’s 2003 record by 3 seconds with a time of 14:48.
