Jamaican sprint sensation Elaine Thompson-Herah scoops the biggest prize winning the Sportswoman of the Year accolade at the Laureus World Sports Awards.
Thompson-Herah was lauded for her outstanding achievements in 2021 which saw her bag a historic double at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The 29-year-old became the first woman in history to successfully defend the 100m and 200m events at the Olympics.
“It been amazing season, to be the first woman to win double Olympics and to be the fastest woman alive,” said Thompson-Herah.
Joining Thompson-Herah in the recognition platform, Sky Brown, Beth Shriever and Emma Raducanu were awarded for their success on their respective categories.
Brown, who is a skateboard sensation, won the World Comeback of the Year award after recovering from a horror crash in 2020 which saw her fracture her skull. Aged 13, she went on to become Britain’s youngest summer games medallist grabbing bronze in Tokyo.
“This is insane, I had some up and downs falling having a pretty bad accident and getting back up winning a medal, is just insane. I am so thankful for everything, I feel like even the fall just pushed me,” said Brown.
Britain’s first Gold medallist in BMX, Shriever was named Word Action Sportsperson of the Year: “I just thought being nominated was enough, but to win it, WOW, what an absolute honour.”
Global tennis star, Raducanu received the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award following her US Open victory at age of 18.
“It means so much to receive this award and I really want to congratulate my other nominees. I feel like it’s been a really great year for me but I’ve still got a lot of work to do.” Raducanu concluded.
