Elosegui Takes Charge in Benoni

Spain’s Tania Elosegui is within sight of her first victory on the Ladies African Tour as she takes a one-stroke lead into Friday’s final round of the Telkom Women’s Classic at the Benoni Lakes Golf Club.

Elosegui signed for a round of 65 to climb to 12 under par in Thursday’s second round, which was interrupted by lightning delays.

First round leader Stacy Bregman is her nearest challenger on 11 under following a 68.

The round was delayed by 50 minutes because of lightning. The players did manage to fit in 30 minutes of play thereafter before the siren called them back into the clubhouse. However, they were able to complete the round.

Elosegui, who is back in South Africa only a few weeks after representing Spain in the Women’s World Cup of Golf at Sun City, escaped the delays.

She teed off at the 10th and turned in four under for her round. An eagle at the par-five third hole – where she hit driver and four iron to 10 feet – was the highlight of her second nine.

But Bregman had to deal with the delays in her round.

Teeing off on the 10th, Bregman opened with three straight birdies and then added another at the 15th.

She bogeyed the 16th but still turned three under for her round. She climbed to four under with a birdie at the third before the first lightning delay. Going out again, she bogeyed the seventh when the second delay hit. She then parred holes eight and nine.

“I played the last four holes in one over. I just couldn’t find my rhythm there. We kept going on and off and on and off, so it was tough to keep concentration,” Bregman said.

Nora Angehrn finished the round at eight under par for the tournament, while amateur Ashleigh Simon is at seven under.

Simon suffered a triple bogey on the par-four 18th, playing as her ninth hole of the day. After pushing her drive into the right rough, she tried to hit a knock-down wedge out and caught a flyer which finished in the water hazard.

South Africa’s Laurette Maritz slumped to a 76 as she dropped back to level par for the tournament.
