Spain’s Tania Elosegui survived a bogey five at the 54th hole to claim her maiden Ladies African Tour title – the Telkom Women’s Classic at Benoni Lakes Country Club.
Elosegui – a member of the Spanish World Cup team – carded an even-par 72 for a three-round total of 204 and a one-stroke win over South Africa’s Stacey Bregman and Rebecca Hudson of England.
Bregman also signed for an even-par 72 but Hudson emerged from the pack to shoot a sensational seven-under-par 65, with the pair finishing on 11-under par 205.
It was a bittersweet day for Bregman, who while failing to claim her maiden professional victory, walked away with the Ladies African Tour Order of Merit title.
The 20-year-old accumulated R84 338 and has put herself in pole position for a place in the Women’s World Cup team.
While selection for the team will be based on Ladies European Tour (LET) results, this achievement from Bregman will most certainly come into the equation.
Elosegui had a fantastic week, opening with 67 then following this up with a magnificent 65 yesterday.
The Spaniard birdied just three holes in her final round, but a stretch of six pars from the 11th to the 16th allowed her to fend off the chasing pack.
“I was very nervous over my last putt,” a relieved Elosegui explained. “I was shaking, I put my putter up and my hand was really shaking but I managed to hold it so I’m very happy.”
Bregman, who finished runner-up for the second time on tour, was extremely satisfied with the Order of Merit title in her rookie professional season.
“It means a lot to me. It shows how consistent you have played,” Bregman explained.
“I’m sure it will give me a little bit of a boost to play in the World Cup – but we will wait and see.”
Bregman leaves for the LET in a month and is excited about the prospect of teeing it up with the best in the world.
“I’m very excited, but now I need to go and practice and do some work with my coach,” she said.
Ashleigh Simon finished the tournament in fourth place on eight-under par 208 and topped the points standing – a barometer which is used to gauge the performances of the amateurs who can’t win prize-money on the Order of Merit.
This result will go a long way to securing a place in the World Cup team for the 17-year-old.
