England beat their hosts by 41 runs to go one-nil up in the series.

Everything went well for the visitors from the start of the match, when they won the toss and chose to bat first. It was tough going for the South Africans who found it difficult to break the 51-run opening stand between Jess Watson (34) and Georgia Adams.

The breakthrough finally came in the 12th over, when Adams was run out by Yolani Fourie for nine. Watson was dismissed in the following over when she was bowled by Lizelle Lee.

Cranstone and Luffe scored 65 and 60 respectively to lead their side in the right direction. The bowlers struggled, conceding 50 runs in extras (38 wides and 12 leg byes), the third highest score of the England innings.

Georgia Hennessey made a good cameo appearance, adding 36 off 27 balls before she was trapped lbw by Lee, who took a total of four wickets for 38 in her 10-over spell. England posted a daunting 275/7 at the end of their innings.

The hosts were off to a shaky start, losing openers Yolani Fourie and Nonkhululeko Thabethe for two and three runs respectively. Robin Searle (85) and Lara Goodall (40) brought calm to the innings, sharing a 94-run, third-wicket partnership.

After the loss of those two however, the innings took another dive. Maryka Kirchoff (11) was stumped off Fi Morris in the 30th over and Lee was trapped lbw for 28 in the 38th. Elriessa Theunissen added 42 crucial runs off 22 balls, but was run out in the 45th over, just one of five run outs in the innings.

South Africa were bowled out for 234 runs at the start of the 47th over. England’s Freya Davies was the leading wicket taker with 3/30.

The second and final 50 over match takes place at the B Field at the North West University PUKKE Sports Village in Potchefstroom on Saturday, 19 October. South Africa will look to salvage the series.
