This years’ Pretoria leg of the six Spar Women’s 10km Challenge was launched on Wednesday at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria, in association with Jacaranda FM.

“Each year we strive to make the Spar Women’s Challenge Pretoria leg a memorable day in the lives of all who partake in it, and we are confident that this year will be no different,” says Desmond Borrageiro, Spar North Rand’s Managing Director.

Spar North Rand has played a pivotal role in establishing the success of the challenge, setting the cornerstone for years to come. “Top athletes such as Rene Kalmer and Annerien van Schalkwyk are once again showing their support of the event, and of course making us proud.

Over the years, The Spar Women’s Challenge, aptly nicknamed “South Africa’s most beautiful race”, has given women the opportunity to show how they make a difference in their communities and in the lives of all they come in contact with.

The theme of the Pretoria leg was announced at the launch – “I am beautiful because…” and the entire day paid homage to this theme, celebrating some of South Africa’s most phenomenal women. Some of the biggest names in the media rubbed shoulders at the launch event, showing their support of the movement and generating excitement.

Women of all ages, races, cultures, denominations and callings have one common thread of gold that knits them together: their beauty. Beauty is not always seen with the eye, but forms the fibre of each woman’s being.

And what better way to celebrate this beauty – this diversity and innate strength – than with an event that is marked on the calendars of thousands of women around Pretoria, Gauteng and the country: The Spar Women’s Challenge.

“The most important message for the 2012 campaign is that we are encouraging women to acknowledge themselves as beautiful, able and strong. Give yourself a pat on the back for a change, ladies,” said Borrageiro.

The Spar Women’s Challenge offers women the opportunity to partake in a 5km or a 10km race and women of all levels of fitness, expertise, shapes and sizes are encouraged to take on the challenge – beauty knows no boundaries.

The Pretoria race is taking place on Saturday the 25th August 2012, at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The 10km race forms part of the Spar Women’s Challenge “Grand Prix Series” – a series of five races hosted across the country, which challenges the entrants to earn points based on their performances in each race, with the elite runners encouraged to enter as many races as their programmes allow.

“This year, we are closing the race entries at 25000, and we anticipate an even more beautiful race than ever before,” comments Borrageiro. “Entries open on the 6th of June and women who wish to partake in the Pretoria challenge can find entry forms online, at selected Spar, SuperSpar and KwikSpar stores.”

An entry into “South Africa’s most beautiful race” will cost R50, and all the participants who enter at one of the aforementioned Spar stores, will receive a t-shirt and their race number. All entrants will receive a goodie bag and a medal compliments of Spar and the sponsors of the event, and these will be handed out upon completion of the race.

Excitement for the Pretoria Spar Women’s Challenge is slowly but surely building, and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are starting to buzz with the words “I am beautiful because…”.

And why shouldn’t it? It is a theme that resonates so deeply within the heart of every woman. Be sure to keep track of the event by following @SparLadiesPTA on Twitter and also join the Spar Women’s Challenge page on Facebook, “Spar Women’s Challenge (Pretoria)”.

Now all that is left for you to do is put your running shoes on (or your dancing shoes, if that is how you prefer to keep fit), and “practice” your most beautiful walk for the Pretoria Spar Women’s Challenge (Hint: there are roughly ten weeks left before the event, so no excuses). And do us a favour – starts saying the words “I am beautiful because…” in the mirror, because you are going to hear them a lot. Here’s to you!
