Plettenburg Bay local Michéle Eray powered home to Fenn Cape Point Challenge on Saturday.
Eray claimed the women’s title, finishing over eight minutes ahead of Nikki Mocké, however just to have finished the gruelling, sometimes lonely slog as a female competitor, of which there were a few on the water for this year’s race, is commendable enough in itself.
In the 20th anniversary of the 50km open ocean ultra-marathon, which sees paddlers start at dawn at Scarborough Beach, paddle around the majestic Cape Point before heading for the finish line at Fish Hoek, took place in unusual North Westerly winds and had paddlers ducking for cover and hugging the shoreline far more than usual.
The iconic Fenn Cape Point Challenge brought down the curtain of the inaugural Fish Hoek Surfski Festival which began with the Peter Creese Lighthouse race on 9 December and was followed by the Cape Town Downwind, which doubled as the SA Champs as well as the final leg of the Oceanpaddler World Series, last weekend.
The Cape Town surfski season continues when the second half of the Best 4 Summer Series gets underway again in January whilst the KZN season commences with the start on the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series on 11 January 2013.
