South African Swimmer Erin Gallagher clinched silver in the women’s 50m butterfly and set a new South African Record at the FISU Games in Chengdu on Wednesday, 2 August 2023.

The 24-year-old broke the 50m women’s butterfly South African and FISU world record in 25.71s in the semi-finals which has stood since 2005. But 30 seconds after, Yufei from the host nation swam 25.29 to set a new FISU world record.

Reflecting on her record, Gallagher said: “I mean it lasted for 30s but I’ll take it, I didn’t expected that at all.”

But it didn’t stop there for Gallagher as she went into the final grabbing second place and set a new South African record time of 25.66s.
