Dr Kenneth Kaunda (North West South) caused an upset when they beat Free State Motheo 47-41 in the quarterfinals of the SPAR National Netball Championships at the University of Johannesburg on Thursday.
Free State were unbeaten during the pool stages, although they drew their match against Ekurhuleni, and appeared to be sure of a place in the semi-finals, whereas Kenneth Kaunda finished fourth in their group.
“I told the players their real tournament started today,” said coach Dorette Badenhorst. “I said they must forget about everything that had happened before, and just have faith in themselves and in each other. “It was very much a team effort, and we just stuck to our game plan and it worked,” said Badenhorst.
Free State led 13-7 after the first quarter, and were 21-19 ahead at half time, but Kenneth Kaunda pulled themselves back in the third quarter, to lead by 34 goals to 32. In the final quarter, it was virtually one-way traffic, with Kenneth Kaunda outscoring Free State by 13 goals to nine.
Nelson Mandela Bay (Eastern Province) also caused something of an upset when they beat Ekurhuleni 45-44 in a nail-biting match. “It was a match of two halves,” said coach Reg Sharp. “We were seven ahead at halftime, and I made some changes to the team, but Ekurhuleni came back strongly in the third quarter, to go two ahead.
“I put two new shooters in for the final quarter, and I think that threw Ekurhuleni. We were playing catch-up, but then we brought ourselves back. “It was a great game, and it could have gone either way. Our senior players came through when it was necessary,” said Sharp.
The other two quarterfinals went according to plan, with Gauteng Central beating Western Province convincingly by 49 goals to 37, and defending champions Gauteng North thrashing Amathole 61-38.
Gauteng North will meet Nelson Mandela Bay in the first semi-final on Friday, and Gauteng Central will play Dr Kenneth Kaunda in the other semi. Western Province, Free State, Amathole and Ekurhuleni will compete in the play-offs for positions five to eight, while Gauteng West and Frances Baard will vie for position nine.SPAR National Netball Championships Day 4 Results, at the University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park: A Section: Gauteng Central 53-47 Frances Baard Boland Bizhub 44-41 Nelson Mandela Bay Gauteng Central 49-37 Western Province Nelson Mandela Bay 45-44 Ekurhuleni Gauteng North 61-38 Amathole Dr Kenneth Kaunda 47-41 Free State Motheo B Section: Umgungundlovu 51-25 West Coast Gert Sibanda 46-44 Western Province SWD 48-05 Lejweleputswa Bafokeng 62-12 Joe Qgabi Boland 46-20 Buffalo City Bojanala 38-48 West Coast Vhembe 50-41 Cacadu Umgungundlovu 55-32 Bojanala Bafokeng 39-28 Gert Sibanda Vhembe 90-08 Lejweleputswa Nelson Mandela Bay 52-21 Zululand C Section: Bafokeng 49-11 Uthukela OR Tambo 78-10 UGU Uthungulu 52-18 Sisonke Nkangala 55-30 Chris Hani Ehlanzeni 70-17 Dr Ruth Mompati Siyanda 53-29 Sekhukhune Siyanda 62-50 Ilembe DCS 28-20 Sekhukhune Waterberg 48-32 Alfred Nzo Gauteng Central 34-26 NM Molema Gauteng Vaal 44-26 Fezile Dabi Ethekwini 48-28 Uthukela Central Boland 43-32 Bafokeng Umzinyathi 37-32 Chris Hani Umkhanyakude 36-33 Uthungulu SANDF 53-19 NM Molema Gauteng Central 56-14 Dr Ruth Mompati Ethekweni 88-06 UGU Sisonke 33-26 Umzinyathi A Section Results on Day 3 of the SPAR National Netball Championships, at the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park (Click here for all Day 3 Results): Ekurhuleni 53-33 Gauteng West Dr Kenneth 46-32 Boland Bizhub Gauteng North 50-35 Gauteng Central Ekurhuleni 54-25 Amathole Nelson Mandela Bay 43-41 Dr Kenneth Kaunda Gauteng North 67-47 Frances Baard Western Province 40-25 Amathole Freestate Motheo 75-30 Gauteng West A Section Results on Day 2 of the SPAR National Netball Championships, at the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park (Click here for all Day 2 results): Gauteng Central 40-36 Dr. Kenneth Kaunda FS Motheo Fundco 59-59 Ekurhuleni Gauteng North 58-42 Boland Bizhub Nelson Mandela Bay 61-45 Frances Baard Amathole 52-34 Gauteng West Free State Motheo Fundco 47-33 Western Province A Section Results on Day 1 of the SPAR National Netball Championships, at the University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park (Click here for all Day 1 results): Boland Bizhub bt Frances Baard 51-42 Western Province bt Gauteng West 56-30 Gauteng North bt Dr. Kenneth Kaunda 42-37 Gauteng Central bt Nelson Mandela Bay 45-41 Free State Motheo Fundo bt Amathole 53-28 Western Province bt Ekurhuleni 42-36 Dr. Kenneth Kaunda bt Frances Baard 63-23 Gauteng Central bt Boland Bizhub 55-44 Gauteng North bt Nelson Mandela Bay 51-45
