From Festive Jammies & Icy Swims – What Some Top Women in Sport Got Up To

Christmas is a time when we get to spend precious time with our loved ones, enjoy each other’s company, and eat dishes we usually only eat at this time of year, and for us in summer-time South Africa, that could mean a roast, a braai, or anything that your family has turned into a tradition. The same goes for the various sportswomen all over the world who are also getting to spend time with those closest to them. 

gsport takes a look at who is doing what over the festive period as some sportswomen are having some downtime with their family and friends while others are busy playing the sport they love. 

At home, Caster Semenya shared a sweet snap on X with her wife Violet, along with their two daughters all wearing matching pajamas surrounded by a Christmas tree and decorations and the caption read: ‘Ke nako ke di time! Merry Christmas to you all from cobra nation!!’ 

Who can forget what a year it has been for netball in the country as South Africa hosted the Netball World Cup which more than raised the visibility of the sport. This sentiment was echoed by Netball SA President Cecilia Molokwanewho via the netball governing body’s X page thanks everyone for their contribution to ‘moving the sport forward’ in her festive season message. 

On the local soccer front, recent record breaker and Banyana Banyana stalwart Janine van Wyk with her partner Julia Mollin and their dog sitting by the Christmas tree. Coach Desiree Ellis also shared her Christmas message on Instagram wishing everyone a joyous festive season.

TheUS Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT)posted a video on Instagram where players Alyssa Thompson and Trinity Rodman are signing karaoke while belting out Justin Bieber’s Christmas track, Mistletoe. The pair put on their best show, signing along and making up some dance moves as they go along, it makes for some fun holiday watching! 

Over to rugby, the Women’s Premiership Rugby has a bit of a different take to the regular Christmas content. Exeter Rugby Chiefs players Linde van der Velden, DaLeaka Menin, and Brooke Bradley spoke about their festive traditions, which range from Secret Santa to big breakfasts on Christmas Day and even an icy winter swim.
