The latest ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings released for December 2023 witnessed a notable surge for South African players following their ODI comeback series win against Bangladesh. The series, marked by outstanding performances, saw South African cricketers making significant strides, solidifying their positions in the global rankings.

Laura Wolvaardt emerged as a consistent force to reckon with, maintaining her stronghold at the 4th spot in the Women’s ODI Rankings for batters. Her remarkable display with a half-century in the second ODI and a crucial fifty in the series finale showcased her prowess. Wolvaardt now sits just two rating points shy of Chamari Athapaththu, and eyes the third position, trailing Beth Mooney by a mere 14 points. Leading the way remains England’s Natalie Sciver-Brunt.

Complementing Wolvaardt’s stellar performance, Tazmin Brits made an awe-inspiring leap, soaring 32 places to secure the 41st spot. Brits’ exceptional century in tandem with Wolvaardt during the third ODI showcased an unstoppable partnership, amassing a monumental 243-run stand.

Another standout contributor, Anneke Bosch, delivered a maiden ODI fifty and clinched the Player of the Match accolade in the second encounter. Bosch’s commendable showing propelled her an impressive 71 spots, now sitting comfortably at No.70 in the rankings.

The all-round brilliance of Marizanne Kapp played a pivotal role in South Africa’s success. Kapp, delivering consistently with both bat and ball, notched up two wickets in each match. Her stellar performances propelled her one spot up in the bowlers’ rankings to No.8 and propelled her to the summit in the all-rounder rankings, ousting the joint position she previously shared with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner.

South Africa’s bowling contingent also witnessed an upward surge in rankings, with Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba showcasing their prowess. De Klerk climbed four places, securing an equal No.19 spot, while Mlaba surged six places to occupy No.24.

These remarkable individual performances significantly contributed to South Africa’s turnaround from a 1-0 deficit to a triumphant 2-1 series victory against Bangladesh. The collective efforts and outstanding displays by these players not only secured the series, but also underscored their growing influence on the global stage.
