The 96th Comrades Marathon is set to take place this coming Sunday, 11 June 2023, and everyone is eager to see how Galaletsang Mekgoe will do this year after finishing 5th in 2022.
Mekgoe has no doubt that she can do better than last year, as the 27-year-old holds the record as the best black woman comrades finisher ever.
“I felt overjoyed,” says Mekgoe after finding out that she is a record breaker. She hopes to inspire the next generation of young women to also break records.
Galaletsang’s preparations for the Comrades Marathon are going well, as she reveals: “My goal is to finish and improve on last year’s run”, as she is certainly among the favourites.
The Ultimate Human Race is a run down from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
As we celebrate Youth Month in The Year of Women’s sport, Mekgoe’s message to the youth is, “I will say again that each time I run I wish to inspire the future generation and give them the hope that anything is possible with hard work.”
