The second leg of the R110 000 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series moves to Jeffreys Bay this weekend where the country’s top female surf stars will be competing in the 3A rated Open and Pro Junior divisions alongside contests for Under 15’s and Novices on Saturday and Sunday, 15-16 December.
After the successful launch of the 2007/8 series of all-girls beach festivals in Margate last weekend, where Heather Clark and Nikita Robb scooped the major titles, this weekend’s event offers girls in the Eastern Cape the opportunity to experience all the fun of the beach and surf scene including free learn-to-surf and Yoga sessions, heaps of give-aways and non-stop promotions with valuable prizes throughout the two days.
Clark, the former ASP World tour campaigner from Port Shepstone will be there to defend her Open women’s crown and hopes to extend her ratings lead while runner-up Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) will be determined to go one better in both the Open and Pro Junior (U20) divisions in the absence of Margate U20 winner Robb who misses this event as she is overseas.
The top contenders including Sarah Maritz (Warner Beach), the 2006/7 Girls Get Out There Open champion, and Margate finalist Stacey Guy (Melkbosstrand) will face two pairs of twins at this event. Talented East London teenagers Laurie and Alice McGregor will line-up in both the Open and U20 categories while Penny and Tammy Robarts from Somerset West will be challenging for the Open title.
Multiple WP champion Tanika Hoffman (Kommetjie) looks the pick of the U15’s where she comes up against fellow Margate finalist Sabrina Scott (Glencairn) and Gina Smith (East London) who has moved into this division after winning the Novices title last weekend.
The Novices, for girls under 18 who have not previously won an event, is bound to unearth exciting new talent from the region. The Kustom Kreative Award sees the most deserving local competitor receive a hamper of Kustom footwear products while the winner of the Von Zipper Expression Session takes home a hamper of Von Zipper eyewear products.
The free beginners’ surfing classes are conducted by qualified coaches who provide specialised equipment and advice that will soon have anyone up and riding and the Soft Lips Yoga sessions enable all-comers to try out the stretching and breathing exercises.
The Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA) and proudly supported by Soft Lips, FNB, Von Zipper, Kustom, Tropitone and Seventeen Magazine. Lifestyle and action coverage of the events will appear in the Seventeen Magazine and website, and on SuperSport in television documentaries produced by Silver Bullet Productions.
The series started in Margate last weekend and after Jeffreys Bay there are stops in Cape Town (2-3 February 2008) and Scottburgh on the KZN coast on 16-17 February where the 2007/8 Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series champions will be crowned.
