South Africa’s first certified woman referee, Akhona Makalima, is duty-bound in Morocco, as she has been selected as one of the 40 referees to officiate at the upcoming Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).

The long-awaited tournament will take place from Saturday, 2 July to 23 July.
The #gsport16 Style Star winner will join Rwandan history-maker, Salima Mukansanga, who became the first woman to officiate at the 2021 Men’s Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Cameroon earlier this year.
The tournament will consist of 16 referees, 16 assistant referees and 8 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) from 24 different countries.
