Following the two Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup’s hosted in South Africa in January and February, come July, South Africa, Cape Town to be exact, will open its doors to the world as many will descend to the Mother City for the 2023 Netball World Cup.

Telecommunications giants, Telkom, an official partner of the showpiece has designed the #StandTall campaign as majestic Africa hosts the World Cup for the first time.

The campaign is designed to create awareness around the #NWC2023 World Cup. It uses inspirational netball led stories to encourage the youth of South Africa to  their individuality and to reach for their dreams.

Telkom is a proud supporter of South African netball; they see netball as a sport with the power to change lives and inspire South African communities. As an official sponsor of the Netball World Cup, Telkom aims to encourage women and the youth of South Africa to embrace their individuality and to fight for their dreams through their #StandTall campaign.

Gugu Mthembu, Chief Marketing Officer at Telkom had a chat with Lonwabo Nkohla:

Gugu, thank you for chatting to us! Please tell us more about the #StandTall campaign?

Telkom recently launched its Netball World Cup campaign, #StandTall, using netball as the vehicle for change. #StandTall aims to encourage the youth to unlock their passions and follow their dreams using Netball as a vehicle to change their perception and behaviours for positive outcomes.

We partnered with four ambassadors: Bongi Msomi; Izette Griesel; Khanyisa Chawane and Tshina Mdau who will share their stories; what they had endured in their personal life, what their rise in sport has been like and where they aspire to be within this profession, demonstrating that anything is possible when you #StandTall.

Telkom has been behind Netball SA for years now, a partnership that has been consistent and game-changing, why does this telecommunications giant continuously support Netball in the country?

Telkom is one of the leaders in supporting Netball in South Africa and remains passionate about growing netball as a female sport across divisions, from grassroot to greatness levels. We believe that women’s sport should also enjoy the same support as the male sporting codes, hence our consistent commitment to supporting the sport.

“Through our sponsorship portfolio, Telkom is proud to be the official sponsor for Telkom Netball League and Telkom Netball Championships.” – Telkom’s Chief Marketing Officer Gugu Mthembu

TNL is South Africa’s premier Netball tournament. Launched in 2014, the semi-professional netball league is a first of its kind in Africa. The league showcases South Africa’s netball talent with coaches and scoutqr6s frequently in attendance. The tournament is an opportunity to showcase the best talent in South Africa.

Launched in 2021 the TNC is a netball schools tournament aimed at producing some of the best future netballs players to represent the country not just nationally, but at an international level. The Telkom Netball Championships provides the opportunity for young players to be scouted, and potentially form part of university team and potentially the various TNL provincial teams.

What does it mean for Telkom to be a sponsor during a World Cup on home soil?

As a brand, we see this as an accolade and testament to the work we have done together with our partners for the growth of Netball in South Africa. As such we will continue to support the sport as we have done in the past and want to rally the whole of South Africa to support the national squad as they compete. It is also important for us to show every child in South Africa that their dreams are important and valid, but they need to get up and work to achieve them, this we will do through our campaigns #StandTall.

What should we expect from Telkom as we lead up to the World Cup in Cape Town?

We have amazing activities lined up leading up to the tournament, such as:

  • Netball clinics with our ambassadors around the country.
  • The #StandTall campaign (which will have activities for everyone to show support to the national team by way of messages of support and fan parks for those who cannot get to CPT).
  • Competitions to win tickets to tournament for our customers
  • Annual Telkom Netball League and Telkom Netball championships tournaments.

Follow our official social media pages for more information on our #StandTall campaign and our activities leading up to the world cup.
