The gsport initiative started off as a dream 14 years ago and today we are the leading women’s sport recognition platform in the country.

Over the past few weeks as nominations poured in for the 2020 Momentum gsport Awards and new members joined the movement, it dawned upon us that our daily interaction as we tell the stories of women’s sport across the globe is paying off.

More than a decade of committing to tell the stories of South African women in sport, gsport went global in September 2019 as we looked to spread our wings on the international stage.

This opened the doors to introduce the African Woman in Sport and Global Woman in Sport categories for the 2020 Momentum gsport Awards and further solidify our presence globally.

The journey has not been an easy one, but with the continuous support from various leading women in sport, the gsport community, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and awards partner, Momentum, the initiative has broken barriers and continues to crack open the glass ceilings.

We hear from prominent women in sport who have taken the time to wish gsport on reaching an incredible milestone!
Penny Heyns – 2020 Momentum gsport Awards Ambassador

Happy, Happy Birthday to the gsport initiative! Once again, congratulations to Kass Naidoo and Ryk Meiring on launching this very important initiative in 2006 and growing it into the country’s leading women’s sport awards. I am proud to be associated with gsport as Ambassador.

Zanele Mdodana – 2020 Momentum gsport Awards Spokesperson

A blessed 14th Birthday gsport, you are a big girl now! We have watched you grow and blossom into this beautiful woman, changing every girl-child’s life in sport. Thank you for being the change SA women in sport desperately needed. You are the answer to all our prayers. We wish you a super 14th Birthday and many more! It is because of you we as women in sport know we are worthy, and our sacrifice and hard work is not in vain.

Kgothatso Montjane – Four-time gsport Award Winner

Happy Birthday to the epitome of women success – #gsportTurns14!

Keep raising the awareness and profiles of women in sport. May you grow to shine the light brighter for the greater success of women in sport on and off the field.

Nazli Hamilton – Multi-Sport Editor at SuperSport

Congratulations to Kass and Ryk and the growing team at gsport. I was privileged to be part of the initiative at the beginning and remain a friend of gsport all these years later. I am proud to see the team growing and wish them all the best for the future. In 2006, we were a room full of women who all knew each other and worked together regularly. Now in 2020, the industry has grown to include so many women that we couldn’t possibly all know each other. That’s fantastic growth but we still have a long way to go before we truly own the spaces that we work in. Happy Birthday, gsport! Thank you for seeing us, celebrating us and keeping us well informed.

Zai Khan – Sports Presenter

Reading your publication and participating in your events over the years has been an incredible inspiration to me, and I look forward to celebrating many more years with you!
